Jean Foos's compositions can resemble lines caught in the act of weaving themselves into three dimensions. Funnels or spherical volumes might appear, then seem to turn inside out. If fabric and nets are implied, they are incidental and fluid within a whole, as cloth seen on the loom shifts our perceptions of warp and weft.
Jean has exhibited her work in Berlin, Rome, San Francisco, and New York. She is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship and has been a two-time nominee for the Joan Mitchell Foundation Award. In 2014 she was an Artist in Residence on Governors Island, a historic naval base in New York Harbor. A book documenting her installation there, Cannonball Lagoon, will be on sale at River House.
Jeff Mack is an award winning glass artist and manager of the glass studio at The Toledo Museum of Art's Glass Pavilion. He has worked in glass for nearly twenty years in contexts including master glass blower, factory stem maker, and assistant, gaffer and fabricator for several artists of distinction. He has keen interest in historic glass-making techniques and has devoted much of his study and work in glass to this topic.
Jeff is the recipient of more than a dozen prestigious fellowships and residencies, including Pilchuck Glass School (where he won the Corning Award in 2003), Corning Museum of Glass, and Haystack Mountain School for Crafts. A graduate of Bowling Green State University, he continues to teach extensively and demonstrate internationally. His work has twice appeared in New Glass Review and is included in private collections around the world.
Michael Ottersen’s use of line to imply the mutability of form, as we perceive it, gives his drawings gravitational pull. Relationships among shapes, colors, and negative space appear unstable, drawing us in. The elements seem to have vectors; imminent change is implied but not witnessed.
Michael has exhibited internationally, with his work noted in publications including ARTNews, New American Painting, Hyperallergic, and Details. He received a B.F.A. from Tyler School of Art (Temple University), and he and Jean Foos studied concurrently in Rome. Michael Ottersen's work appears courtesy of SEASON, Seattle.
Peter Morais has been an exhibition planner and writer for institutions including New York Public Library, The Smithsonian, National Trust for Historic Preservation and National Park Service. He was co-director of Gallery 10 in Santa Fe and has curated exhibitions at Vassar College Library and Spencertown Academy, an art center in the Hudson Valley.
